Audio: Share a great instrumental song or album.
that's really hard to answer. how do you choose an instrumental piece with such broad categories?
I mean obviously you have classical music that is awesome. My favorite is Rhapsody in Blue btw.
but to upload a song? that means it has to be on this computer and i just don't have that many instrumentals on it.
So now it comes down to what I have on my computer. And of COURSE I have Brand New on my computer. And of COURSE they have an instrumental song.
So here you go.
Although it's questionable if it's really instrumental but there are no WORDS perse.
Whatever. I love it.
Audio: Share an album or song in your collection with a really strange title.
punk bands tend to like making strange names for songs. brand new might have been the originators on that but don't quote me on that.
"good to know that if i need attention all i have to do is die" - is a song title apparently inspired by one of their friend's finding out that word had spread he'd died and then proceeded to get a gazillion phone calls.
tbs is also good with "cute without the e (cut from the team)" i don't know the story behind that one but i do love the name.
Panic, FOB, they all have those crazy long titles now that make you go .... really...
here's a song for you.
to my cousin, for the love of god, i've had my flickr pics up since that morning XP HERE!!!!
sadly the vin pics didn't turn out the bestest in the world i have seen some good ones other people are posting though, check out the brand_new lj comm that i signed you up for.
So onto the review. I think I'm actually going to be pretty horrible at it, when it's bands I tend to love I don't know how to be objective or put my thoughts down well.
First off the opening band was Manchester Orchestra. They have a semi experimental sound and have the computer track backups to prove it. Usually bands using a computer to do their back up don't appeal to me but they also had near 6 people already on stage so I think they were just trying their hardest to make the LIVE sound like the RECORDING. Honest boys you don't really have to, that's why most of us love live shows - because it's different. They were crazy fun and some of Brand New and Kevin came out and sang/played along for the last song.
Honestly I don't know how to contain my fangirl so I'll just mention that I kept seeing Jesse and other Brand New members on the side rocking out and I couldn't help but squee a little. I love people that are that into music (since I'm one of them).
Kevin Devine and the Goddamn Band came out after a quick (at least it felt quick) set change and they rocked out. I have to give Kevin props because Brand New and Manchester are so NOT the same type of music. Kevin's music is acoustic poppish rock. He even said he was going to try to play an acoustic song (ballgame) but they hadn't been going over very well at the other shows. I loved it. Ballgame is one of those songs that I can identify with right now and I sang along to every word - much to the dismay of the crowd around me.
By this time somehow without trying we were almost at the front of the moshpit (we started out in the back and even though it's a small area we HADN'T EVEN TRIED TO MOVE) . Brand New was coming on next so of course the crowd started shifting around us to get as close as possible. I of course being OBSESSIVE new what to expect with the set and was starting to giggle with promise of an amazing set (+20 songs)
They started off with Your Favorite Weapon songs and the crowd went crazy. Looking back it works out well for the most part to do everything in chrono order since the 'moshier' songs are the older ones. So yes, They did about 4 yfw and then moved into deja and played the complete cd - the quiet things. Apparently there is much to do about them dropping it? I could care less because it meant hearing more newer songs. They moved into the new cd by starting out with Welcome to Bangkok and then played Sowing Season, Degausser, Millstone, Luca, Archers and You Won't Know.
Funny Antecdote: apparently at every show Jesse goes on about the true meaning of Play Crack the Sky and the proceeds to talk about a movie. For ours it was Jumanji: I've also heard them doing Mrs. Doubtfire, Cool Runnings... I think this just means that he heard that we (the fans) were all like "I wish he'd talk more" and going with it. Whatever the reason it was hilarious and awesome.
Groupie talk ahead:
After the show I had to stretch to get myself out of that Moshpit tension that you pickup after a show and then went out to the Merch table. I was my cousins bitch that night since she had all the money. We picked up a Manchester poster, after talking to the merch/designer who was incredibly nice, and a cd. Then we went to try to whine to Brand New's merch man about how we wanted one of the posters (they only sell 10 per show so.. get there early). We did not win that war. I then chatted with Kevin a bit and asked him if he called the girl this time. He laughed and kind of blushed when he realized he had told us that story at the Straylight show last December. I didn't pry but he just said "Yeah I did." Then I bought a cd and got him to sign it, then we tried to remember if I had paid him. He made me start to question it to but my cousin swore we did because she was now broke. Then someone had left a cd that the whole band had signed. Kevin picked it up and they were talking about selling it for double at the next venue. Cue me putting on a cute pouty face and mentioning how much I should have it. I won that war. I'd like to think it's because I'm adorable but they probably just didn't mind to much. By this time most of the venue had cleared out and Garrett was chilling near the merch. Of course there were these boys having a massive convo with him so I didn't want to fangirl interrupt and then just choke. Because I would have. Seriously. So we were working up our nerve and asked the merch guy for a sharpie. He surprised us by interrupting Garrett for us and having him sign our tickets.
Oh and we also saw Vin make a beeline straight out the door. And my cousin got "Lou" the merch guy to sign her ticket. Very hilarious guy. On the way back to the car I near convinced my cousin to be a stalker with me and go back to the bus like 10 times. Her sanity got in the way and we went home. The End.

hehehe. and we're back to me posting brand new.
I post this track really only because of Jesse's banter at the end of the song. I kinda love it alot. He doesn't really talk much at concerts anymore but I swear if I was there I probably would have offered myself for him. ;)
Audio: Share a song that reminds you of a current or past relationship.
geez.. um... i feel like all of my answers are all Brand New.. O.o
anyways i was in a relationship with a boy that only seemed to be able to be seen in public with me if he was drunk. now let me make this clear, he had no problem going on dates with me if no one he knew was around. BUT whenever someone he knew was around? We weren't anything...unless he had been drinking and then he didn't mind hitting on me. anyways, the song would be brand new's me vs maradona vs elvis. i have no music for you this time (it's on my pc, and i am still on my macbook)
but here are the lyrics:
After one or two I get used to the room
We go slow when we first make our moves
By five or six bring you out to the car
Number nine with my head on the bar
And it's sad, but true
Out of cash and I.O.U's
I've got desperate desires and unadmirable plans
My tongue will taste of gin and malicious intent
Bring you back to the bar
Get you out of the cold
A sober, straight face gets you out of your clothes
And they're scared that we'll know
All the crimes they'll commit
Who they'll kiss before they get home
I will lie awake
Lie for fun and fake the way I hold you
Let you fall for every empty word I say
Barely conscious in the door where you stand
Your eyes are fighting sleep while your mouth makes its demands
You laugh at every word trying hard to be cute
I almost feel sorry for what I'm going to do
And your hair smells of smoke
Who will cast the first stone?
You can sin or spend the night all alone
Brass buttons on your coat hold the cold
In the shape of a heart that they cut out of stone
You're using all your looks that you've thrown from the start
If you let me have my way I swear I'll tear you apart
Cause it's all you can be
You're a drunk and you're scared
It's ladies night, all the girls drink for free
I will lie awake
And lie for fun and fake the way I hold you
Let you fall for every empty word I say
Audio: Share a song that fits the moment you're living right now.
Inspired by cherè.
ohhhhkayyy...so this one actually delves into my personal life. so first off let me tell you by saying that the song is "Failure by Design" by Brand New. It's on their first cd "Your Favorite Weapon" and currently i only have this live audio clip of it...so that's what you get.
Why does this song fit me right now? Because after a year I still haven't found a job in my career field and I'm still just plugging away but losing faith. At the same time in the song you can tell that he (jesse?) is pissed because people are trying to help him and while he knows that they love him it all just seems condescending. Which is what it feels like to me. It's like ...okay i get that you love me but stop telling me what i should do! don't you think i know this?!!?
okay so i never am on vox as much as I would like to be. so when i do notice things that would have been fun i get all sad that i missed them. to hell with that!
Video: Show us a great music video.
There are alot of really good music videos out there. damn. it's reaaallyyy hard for me to choose. Of course I could always show brand new's vid that got me addicted to them (sic transit).. or straylight run's existentialism on prom night or the ORIGINAL version of cupid's chokehold that was just ridiculously better then that new version...sadly i haven't had my fuse fill lately and these videos might be a little old.
but overall it comes down to what makes a great video for me. And I think that it is originality. I do like the story lines though, I like videos that can be seen as mini movies and aren't just the band singing. REM knew how to do man.
I am excited as you might now, when ever ANYTHING is said about Brand New. But I am double excited after seeing Kevin play for the first time with Straylight a couple of months back.
Since then I've started loving him more and more since I'm starting to listen to more and more laidback acoustic stuff. And possibly because of these videos that surfaced on youtube....
I GOT MY BRAND NEW CD IN THE MAIL TODAY.
*dances*
it's crazy cause the disc packaging is CRAZY THIN it feels like it's a single or something but it's got a slip for the cd and a slip for the booklet. and yes the rumors are correct because they ARE asking for us to send them a dollar for the lyrics.... if the rumor that i heard is true (you get them photocopied from jesse lacey's journal or something) it might be worth it. i have to decide once more people get back on it.
there is definitly this simple undercurrent of anti labelness to the
whole thing. like they are ANTI promotion of the cd. which is what
happens when a band doesn't want to be with: they basically don't push
themselves they try to not sell what the label expects so that they
will drop them.
....
and a friend of theirs recently did that (Brandon Reilly purposfully
put out a bad album demo since he didn't want to be on a label anymore
so that he could then form Nightmare of You)
oh man. so someone was also gracious enough to put up the hidden track so i have that on my computer now too. I'm too like....yayyyyyyy....
i have to listen to the actual cd though because i have this feeling that they did this to alot of songs so that if you listen to them on your computer? You might be missing out.
So far Millstone is my favorite new favorite of the "i haven't heard before". You won't know is also up there but I've seen that live..and really all the ones I've seen live i love (luca and sowing season).
My favorite demo didn't make the cut but I've heard that they HAVE played it live so it might leak eventually as another bside on another single...*crosses fingers* i love it the way it is though so even if i didn't i'll just keep listening to it in demo form.
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
beyond happy for this cd and i'm liking it.
and a weird sidenote? Last.fm should let us post lyrics to the song info. i mean...duh obvious right?
