It's always fun seeing bands you've seen before. You usually know the words and are a little more open to the scene of the concert. Of course I haven't seen HTL in maybe a year and haven't dedicated any listening time to them since then....but still...
The concert was at a veryveryvery small venue called the Hi Dive and for as many times as I've been to the bar next door I still got lost finding the place. Brilliant.
So that made us miss about half of Love Arcade's set but from what I could tell they were fun pop rock... the fact that it looked like they walked out of Urban Outfitters may have only confirmed it. After the show I walked over to the merch table but couldn't find the Love Arcade one (by the way the merch set up at the Hi Dive? Not so good. very small, very crowded for 4 bands). I ended up talking to the merch/manager for a couple minutes and getting the cd. I haven't given it a full listen yet but I bought it so that should tell you something.
Forgive Durden was next and in all honesty that's the band that I had come to see. I really fell for them ever since getting their cd at the Warped Tour last year. I'd seen them once before and they were pretty great live so I was very excited. They didn't dissappoint me this time either. They started off the set with the song from Moulin Rouge "There was a boy..." and I had the biggest grin on my face. The show was solid and of course they finished up with The Tango where they go crazy on the drums. I think that the crowd wasn't into the whole set but that part always gets the crowd's attention.
My unexpected happy tonight was Valencia; who were pretty amazing live. I honestly can't remember if I've seen them before (old age setting in) but I didn't have their cd and I only knew one of the songs. Alot of the crowd was there for them though and they feed off each others energy for the whole set. I was definitely convinced I need their cd after that.
Hit the Lights just came out with their first video and are really starting to break
into being well known. The crowd knew all the words to the songs. The
band was pretty talkative and even wished one of the crowd members a
happy birthday. I personally am always a fan of crowd/band interaction:
it makes the band more likeable. The lead singer joked about not being
able to do an "encore" because there was no backstage (they literally
have to walk through the crowd to get on the stage). So in the end they
just kept asking us if we want more...which of course people screamed
yes too. They finished with "Hey Jealousy" which is on the Punk Goes
90's comp and I felt old again. ;)
After the concert a couple of the band members were walking around trying to sell their cds. I tend to find that adorable that they're pimping themselves. I was planning on buying the Valencia cd anyways but the guitarist was hilarious when I pretended to think about it. He said he'd throw in a high-five: WHO CAN RESIST THAT. We talked for a bit after but he was technically "working" so I let him go off and pimp some more.
So once a week i go pick up this MASSIVE roll of flyers and handbills to spread around town and I usually hit up about 4 places. I think that's pretty good but I feel bad because alot of it goes to waste. The places I go have pretty small boards so I don't get to put up duplicates or anything... oh well whatev.
on the yay side it has caused me to be going to a TON more shows. My next one is Forgive Durden (SQUEEE) this Wednesday and then Single File in December.
*dances*
I love concerts.
oooh so on my last post i was like "last.fm needs to put up lyrics" apparently they don't because they are worried about copyright...weird.
PS. BUY THE BRAND NEW CD.
And quite possibly in both senses. We came up to the venue and i was surprised to see they've moved up to a bus from thier old van. But the sense I mean is that they sold out the show and that's it was just crazy in there.
So we got there about 10 minutes before the first band started playing and were lounging around the merch table since Dee had already stated that she was going to chill in back. So the streeteam coordinator for forgive durden? soda jerk?? was working FD's merch and basically talked me into the yellow shirt because the lead singer from Portugal! made it and it was a double print. it's pretty neat. (and he was pretty cute)
After meeting a fellow Brand New enthusiast we headed to the front to find out the lineup and the opener was Forgive Durden....which made me go !!!!! to the fact that they were the first. I love them. like. really really really. and this show only made me love them more. There weren't alot of us forgive durden fans and i ended up 3 rows back directly behind this tall ass guy. So i tried to be nice and ask him if i could switch just for this set and he told me no. That's when it became my obligation to SCREAM IN HIS EAR for the whole set. fucking prick (later my cousin heard he had to leave cause he had a cerfew...!!!!) But Forgive Durden was awesome. yay.
Then it was Piebald and they didn't play any song I knew but they were
really good too. I ended up buying 2 cds afterward from them and
being happy. COWBELL! hehehe. it was a fun show.
Mewithoutyou reminds me of radiohead and mars volta. They didn't really feel like they fit with the rest of the bands but they were pretty good. Good enough for me to want to have their songs but not for me to spend my limited money on them right now.
So last time the Say Anything concert was crazy and the crowd was insane and it was just... hyperreal. But this time it was so anti. I guess because alot of these kids had never been to a show before? Or at least they acted like it. I had thought that'd I'd bail after the first song but i wasn't getting pushed around nearly as much as I thought i was going to so I stuck it out until I just got bored with it and had finished getting vid of the songs i wanted (since i saw the set list).
All in all it was a good time really but the highlight for me was Forgive Durden and now I must go to more of their shows.
PS. I HAVE SO MUCH VIDEO. i figured out how to move them onto my
storage card so i have at least one song from each band and almost 2.
So as soon as youtube stops being a bitch and makes the recognizable
i'll make a seperate post on that i guess...
sometimes this richtext nonsense PISSES ME OFF. like when i can't type or click in the TYPING SCREEN. wtf.
and the fact that i can't comment to a persons comment.
and that I've now tried like 20 times to update the shewantsrevenge/placebo concert entry with 1/3 luck. the only happy that comes from that is the fact that i can at least see the vids showing up in the display but errors when i click. *fumes*
i go to Shai Halud tonight!
<.<
>.>
may or may not be because i'm in love with their band name.
ps?
I'M ON THE STREETTEAM! woot. and this is the first official freebie show. yayyyy. makes me happy inside.
concerts coming up on my list? Say Anything with forgive durden, piebald, and mewithoutyou AND Straylight Run with Kevin Devine. woooo
Damn Gym Class Heroes had to 'splode onto the radio scene. Yay for them I guess but BOOO for me and not buying tickets to a now sold out show. Fuck. That show might have been really good but now it's going to suck anyways. Do you know why?
Because the people going don't really care about seeing a good performance; they're there to say they saw Gym Class Heroes. Now you may think this is presumptious of me and how could I know, maybe they all recently fell in love with the band and it's clever lyrics and good beats. But I can tell you this because of my recent experience at the Paramore show. These kids don't want to listen to music. They are scenesters that want to be seen. Blah to them.
I'm still trying to meet up with the marketing guy for Soda Jerk to become a street team member. I told him anytime this week I could pull off meeting him. I'm still very excited about this because concerts are my oxygen. I can see myself hitting a wall as I get older and start to feel extremely out of place in those environments but hopefully my career choice will give me an excuse? *crosses fingers* (btw I am a graphic designer).
If you haven't guessed by now I don't really write personal info on vox and mostly just about my entertainment life...and trust me, you're not missing much. I got a new neighbor today! *waves* apparently we both like Brand New. yes. XD
mmmmm....recently I've decided to make Forgive Durden one of my fav bands. I regret not driving 4 hours to see them but hopefully they will be through here again soon. I've also decided that they should open for Brand New. that would be lovely *makes it happen*
first off.

O.O ... dkljsdfaskldjfdsfjlffdskfjdfsl
i need to find a way to get free concert tix or something cause this is not working.
Speaking of concerts. I turned down 1 tonight while deciding to make it up to myself and going to the one this Saturday. So I am going to go see Amber Pacific and The Audition this Sat in Denver. Even though I work till 5. Show is at 7 and then I probably work the next day at 11. Fun times for me. woo.
Also. I am really starting to fall for Forgive Durden. You guys should seriously be falling in love with them too. It's making it hard for me to say no to going to their concert even though it's 3 hours away.
Oh and in other entertainment media. You all should check out summer tv. cause really that's where my heart is starting to lie. It feels like the cable channels put out riskier shows with newer concepts than anyone else and they are stealing my heart with them.
Everyone should be watching: Three Moons Over Milford, The 4400, 30 Days, Psych ... and there are others that I like but I'm not addicted to. So I won't even go on about those.
oh god. damn these emails i get every week. why do i open them.

I already bought tickets to the Paramore concert since my friend likes them and I kinda want to check them out more. fuck fuck fuck. i have no money. somehow i need to make this list smaller.
Okay...so. I went to warped tour. Most of you already know this since I wrote about it in my livejournal but since I'm trying to make this my "entertainment" journal I shall post some of this over here.
I bought many many cds when I went to warped tour and I haven't listened to all of them yet but I can tell you that people should go get the Forgive Durden cd and Cute is What We Aim For. Another CD that I don't own but kind of goes with this set is the Paramore cd. (they are all from Fueled By Ramen sillies)
I love Forgive Durden because they named a song after Lewis Carrolls "The Jabberwock" and then made a rock tango. They win at life you guys. You need this cd if you like harder mod rock. And now I got the tango song stuck in my head just from thinking about it.
Then you got Cute. Who are just...cute. The music is light and poppy and is definitly for a younger audience but the songs have good hooks and it's just a good happy go lucky album. At first I was like "oookayy...this is kinda....15 year oldish..." but pretty soon it just grabs you in and goes <3. yep like that. all 13 year old IM like. Oh as a sidenote I am going to go see them in about a month....with Paramore at the Cervantes.
Which brings me to the new Evanescence...(did i really just say that?) Okay they don't sound ANYTHING like evanescence and I only compare because the lead singer is a girl, but other than that they have completely different music styles and (for all i know) she doesn't make her own clothes. But Paramore has it going on; they are uberyoung but sing from the heart and while they border the poprock they try to stay more on the "we like guitar riffs and neat drum beats" side.
Oh and I'm dissapointed in Punchline. I'll try to listen to it a couple more times but I'm not feeling it much..it seems...generic?
