Last.fm / CBS hands over listening info to RIAA
So then. wow. I have totally gone to bat for last.fm more times than I can count and you know what? Technically they haven't done anything wrong. But I feel like if they weren't owned by a major corporation they wouldn't have given up the info.
Of course right now this is all rumor and hearsay but it brings to light the obvious question that we are openly giving away information about ourselves that has the potential to hurt us. Do we give that up in favor of gaining something we find useful? Thoughts?
The RIAA is still maintaining that ripping MP3s of your own CDs is stealing. In the case of Atlantic v. Howell, husband and wife Jeffrey and Pamela Howell are representing themselves against the RIAA after being sued in August 2006 for using KaZaA. While the Howells argue the files were for personal use and “for transfer to portable devices, that is legal for ‘fair use’” the RIAA filed a brief last week stating the MP3s are “unauthorized copies.”
This is just getting to the point of ridiculousness. Think of ALL those people out there that actually still BUY cds and then put them onto their computer so they can play them on their ipod. You'd THINK that this is money they want. It goes to the labels and they prefer it to the nothing that they receive from online music sellers. I'm stupefied by the idiocy of the RIAA and how they are criminalizing people that contribute to their income.
